Review: Winchester Elite Defender 10mm 180gr Bonded Jacketed Hollow Point – Great self-defense ammo for when you’re off the trail

I recently had the opportunity to test out the new Winchester Defender Elite 10mm 180gr Bonded Jacketed Hollow Point in my Glock 29 Gen 4 10mm Semi-Auto Sub-Compact 10-Round Pistol. As someone who carries this pistol for dangerous game defense in the wilderness, I typically load it with full power bear protection rounds such as the Underwood Xtreme Penetrator or Underwood 200gr Hardcast rounds. However, when I'm not out in the wilderness, I also use my Glock 29 as a concealed carry weapon.

For concealed carry, bear defense rounds tend to over-penetrate, which is not ideal for self-defense situations. That's why I switch to jacketed hollow point ammunition when I'm off the trail. After spending some time at the range with the Winchester Defender 10mm JHP rounds and watching ballistic gelatin tests on Youtube, I have been thoroughly impressed. In fact, these rounds have become my go-to choice for concealed carry.

The Power and Performance of Winchester Defender 10mm JHP Rounds

The Winchester Defender rounds may not be as powerful as the well-known Underwood and Buffalo Bore JHP's, but they still pack a punch. Shooting these rounds in my Glock 29 still feels like shooting real 10mm ammunition. The slightly lower power, however, does have its advantages. The recoil and muzzle blast are less intense, making it easier to handle and shoot accurately in a small gun like the Glock 29 compared to the larger Glock 20.

Now, you might be thinking that if these rounds are less powerful, they might be less effective in stopping a threat. However, I urge you to watch the ballistic gel tests on Youtube, which clearly demonstrate the devastating impact of the Winchester Defender round.

Ballistic Gel Tests of Winchester Defender 10mm JHP Rounds

Despite the intense winds during the gel tests, I was still able to shoot good groups. Once the winds died down after dark, I conducted another test using an LED flashlight for illumination. Without the wind pushing me around, the Defenders shot straight and accurately.

Based on my experience and the results of the ballistic gel tests, I can confidently say that the Winchester 10mm Defender Jacketed Hollow Point strikes an excellent balance of controllability, reduced muzzle blast, and effective stopping power. The rounds are accurate, and the nickel-plated cases contribute to long-term feeding reliability.

Due to their exceptional performance, the Winchester Defender rounds have become my primary choice for concealed carry when I'm not exploring the tree-covered trails in the Rockies.

Overall, I highly recommend the Winchester Elite Defender 10mm 180gr Bonded Jacketed Hollow Point for anyone looking for reliable self-defense ammunition. These rounds offer the perfect combination of controllability, reduced muzzle blast, and stopping power. They have certainly earned a 5 out of 5-star rating from me.
